Events at sea under Cameroon maritime law is regulated by title IV of the CEMAC Shipping code of 2001 as amended in 2012.
Maritime incidents include any collision, grounding, fire, capsizing, loss of vessel, assistance or rescue operation at sea, and the occurrence of general average.
Any maritime incident, and more generally any incident occurring on board a vessel that risks creating a danger to navigation and/or a threat of pollution of the sea, must be reported by message addressed to the competent maritime authority by the captain(s) of the vessel(s) concerned, as soon as this incident occurs within the limits of waters under national jurisdiction, including in the exclusive economic zone.
Events Covered by the Cameroon Maritime Law
- Collision – Collision is any collision between inland navigation vessels and/or boats regardless of the nature and conditions of the water. See more
- Loss of Vessel – A total loss of vessel occurs when the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the vessel. See more
- Maritime Assistance – Assistance by a ship or any person on board a ship, to another ship in danger of being lost, constitutes an act of maritime assistance. See more
- Grounding – Grounding is the condition of a ship that strikes the shore and comes to rest without sufficient water under the keel. See more
- Fire – A fire occurs when the fire spreads to parts of the ship that are not intended to be consumed. See more
- Maritime Rescue – The competent maritime authority is responsible for coordinating the means likely to participate in maritime rescue operations, in application of the International Conventions in force, including that on Maritime Search and Rescue signed in Hamburg on 27 April 1979. See more
